Every year, the Sheboygan together to celebrate its claim to fame: the bratwurst. Brat Days pays homage to this beloved sausage and has become one of the largest fundraising projects for the Sheboygan Jaycees.
Due to the overwhelming success of the first Bratwurst Days in 1953, the Sheboygan Jaycees decided to make it an annual event. In 1954, the festival expanded, featuring two 11-pound brats on display in Fountain Park. The following years saw a steady increase in attendance, with more activities added to the lineup. Brat Days became known as the “wurst” capital of the world.
Now, the festival is a combination of Midwestern family fun and the Wisconsin brat experience. Thanks to Johnsonville, the festival’s title sponsor, Brat Days has grown even bigger, featuring national musical entertainment and the Johnsonville Brat-Eating World Championship. The festival also includes the Brat-Tastic Food Gallery, where local restaurants showcase creative dishes featuring bratwurst as the main ingredient.
One of the key aspects of Brat Days is its commitment to giving back to the community. Proceeds from the festival are primarily donated to various organizations and charities in Sheboygan. Over the years, organizations such as the Field of Dreams, Above and Beyond Children’s Museum, Jaycee Quarryview Park, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society have benefited from the funds raised during Brat Days.
